This watchtower is at the end of the market street, Salah'din road. The road ends at no mans land, the border to Egypt. We visited the market a day in March 2003 and several times during our three hour visit, the vendors and the customers had to seek cover when machine guns without warning were fired from the watchtower. We saw or heard no provocations or firing back from the palestinians. People seemed used to this scenario......

Children playing close to one of the many watchtowers around Rafah. Extreme danger has become part of everyday life. In March 2003, Tom Hurdall, an ISM activist, tried to get some children to leave a particularly dangerous area. He was wearing the ISM activist´s orange vest. He was killed by a shot in the head.

The Israeli Defense Force demolishing Palestinian houses are normally giving the people in the houses maximum 10-15 minutes to gather their belongings and get out before the bulldozers tear the house apart.
